If you had any doubt that domain names are important for business success, you might be convinced by the recent lawsuit filed by Microsoft over two domain names that they want but are currently owned by someone else.

According to PCMag.com, Microsoft is coming out with its newest console, which they have named the XBox One. They are now looking to own the domain names xboxone.com and xboxone.net. The problem? Those names currently belong to a resident of the UK.  Microsoft hopes to prevail in their claims that the domain names are a trademark that they own, and that the domain names were registered in "bad faith" (the practice of buying a desirable name with the intention of selling it later to the owner of the trademarked name). Microsoft was apparently trying to conceal the name of their new product, but still, it might have been easier to register the domain names rather than deal with the hassle of going to court later. Microsoft knows, however, how important the domain name is to business and how it directly relates to the ability of the web surfer to find you and naturally, to the sales of your products and services.

Many new businesses nowadays research domain names to check availability, before choosing a company name. A lot have been caught out by paying a heap of money to have the business branded, then find out there isn't a domain name available to suit.

For a business, the right domain name can be your most important marketing tool. An effective domain name is memorable, which means it shouldn't be too long or complicated. It should contain your business name and it is recommended that you avoid hyphens between words and buy both the .co.nz and .com extensions of your chosen domain name. Both would link to the same site.
